Dahmeshöved Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Nice lighthouse between Dahme and Kellenhusen. Can be approached either on a walk or a bike ride.

The Dahmeshöved lighthouse stands on a coastal promontory about halfway between Fehmarn and Travemünde.

The octagonal tower was built entirely from bricks in 1878 and 1879. It is 28.8 meters high, which means that the beacon is 33.7 meters above sea level.

The neighboring smaller brick tower was built in 1939 to give the lighthouse keeper an opportunity to monitor the visibility.

During the German-German division, the Dahmeshöved lighthouse had a special meaning for the GDR citizens, because it was a point of reference when escaping across the Baltic Sea as the so-called "light of freedom".

Those who are more interested in the lighthouse can also visit it with an expert guide. The opening times - in the season from April to October - are: Sunday to Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every half hour.

November 11, 2025,Dahme Kellenhusen im Herbst
It's November and in Kellenhusen we were still able to stop at Puck's bakery in town. It's open daily until 4 pm. In Dahme we went to Fischhuus. They'll be closing for their winter break soon. Tomorrow we're eating at Vörn Diek; they're only closed on Tuesdays.

We've been using this wonderful path as pedestrians for many years. After the storm surge in October 2023, large sections of the path "disappeared." It's not the ravages of time that are taking their toll, but rather the ubiquitous climate change on the coast and on the trees inland.

Unfortunately, the planned path along the Baltic Sea towards Dahme was not possible, some breaks on the edge of the slope after the last storm surge in autumn and a clearly closed dirt road led our way via Vogelsang and Bokhorst to the Dahm lighthouse. We were even able to eat something on the Dahmer Promenade... It's pre-season, almost everything …

Somehow the two-legged friends were awake this morning, and so with only 2 cups of coffee we went on this round, past the wild boar enclosure in Kellenhusen to Dahme and via the Dahmeshöved lighthouse back to Kellenhusen, where we then sat down in the "Fisch Kiste" in Kellenhusen to fill up. Really recommended! 👍
And since, as we all …

Always a beautiful route, if the water level/wind cooperates, always along the coast right by the water.
Today, starting from the youth hostel, again along the top past the lighthouse.
