Robber Knights' Gate, Klinge

Highlight • Monument

The robber barons gate is an archway with three armor trophies originally built around 1700 in the village of Klinge in Niederlausitz. It was the entrance gate to the Klinge manor. In 1973 the archway was destroyed in an accident and was not rebuilt due to the planned demolition of the site for the mining of lignite by the Jänschwalde open-cast mine. The three knight trophies on the gate have been secured.
Replicas of the gate were set up at two locations. One was built in the 1980s in Groß Schacksdorf, about ten kilometers away. In 2001, another replica of the gate was built in Klinge, south of the original location, and provided with the original figures. The original gate stood at the north entrance to the Klinge manor, about eight kilometers west of the town of Forst (Lausitz). Most of the village, including the estate, was excavated in the 1980s for open-cast lignite mining, and today the Klinger See is located there. The southern part of the village with the Klinge train station, about one kilometer south-southwest of the estate, has been preserved. The location of the new gate in Klinge is about 400 meters north-northeast of the train station at a vantage point on the edge of the remaining open pit.

View of the open pit and the dreary lunar landscape. Hard to imagine that this wasteland can one day become a living natural paradise and recreation area.

Highlight • Viewpoint

There is a vantage point on the emerging Baltic Sea. Display board with the creation and “vision pictures”, that's how it should be.

Lakoma Memorial and Cottbus Lake Inlet

Highlight • Historical Site

There are well-made information boards about the localities, the Baltic Sea and the cycle path on the circular path that is being built around the Baltic Sea. Here at the inlet structure are the information boards about Lakoma. The village had to make way for the Cottbus-Nord brown coal open-cast mine in 2006 and only one farmstead remained.

Cottbuser Ostsee inlet structure

Highlight • Structure

Directly at the intake structure there are the associated display boards and seating to watch the flooding. Flooding began in April 2019. On the LEAG website there are weekly current figures on the fill level, the feed and the proportion of Spree water. More than 80 percent of the water required is to be taken from the Spree. leag.de/de/geschaeftsfelder/bergbau/cottbuser-ostsee

Merzdorf Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you are looking for a unique view, then the observation tower in the Cottbus district of Merzdorf is just the thing for you. The tower was opened in 2006 and has since offered a great panorama over the Cottbus Baltic Sea - an artificial body of water that is gradually being created from the former Cottbus-Nord opencast mine. You can reach the viewing platform at a height of 34 meters via a total of 173 steps.
