Travemünde Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The old lighthouse Travemünde is the oldest lighthouse in Germany.
It was first mentioned in documents in 1330.
In 1534, Danish troops destroyed the tower.
In 1539, Dutch bricklayers built the current lighthouse.
The beacon was probably initially operated as an open wood fire, later with hemp oil lamps in front of gilded concave mirrors.
The upper part of the tower burnt down in 1827 after a lightning strike.
It was renovated in the classical style and provided with kerosene lamps.
Starting from 1903 electric arc lamps shone, starting from 1937 incandescent lamps.

As a technical cultural monument, the lighthouse was registered in 1922.
In 1972, the beacon had to be switched off, as the new building of the Maritim Hotel obscured the tower. In 1974, a new beacon was put into operation on the Maritim.
2003/2004, the Old Lighthouse was refurbished. 12,000 stones were taken out to a depth of 30 centimeters from the masonry, which is up to a meter thick, and replaced. In addition, the 600 square meter outside area was completely grouted and the tower also partially re-plastered inside. For the extensive work the water and shipping authority (WSA) Lübeck invested 250,000 euros.

The Old Lighthouse Travemünde is 31 meters high and now houses a maritime museum on eight floors, which gives an insight into the history of beacon technology. On display are models of light ships, various sea lanterns as well as former light systems of other lighthouses. On the walls are numerous photos with detailed information about the lighthouses, which belong to the area of the WSA Lübeck.
Over 142 steps lead the individual stairs in lofty heights. On the top floor you can admire the still functioning system of the Travemünde lighthouse with 1000 watt incandescent lamps. The all-round view gallery also offers a unique view over the Skandinavienkai and the old town of Travemünde and across the Bay of Lübeck to Grömitz and over the coast of Mecklenburg Vorpommern.

Travemünde Harbour Entrance

Highlight • Viewpoint

Travemünde harbor
The Baltic Sea spa town of Travemünde in the south of the Bay of Lübeck is one of the most beautiful and charming seaside resorts in Europe and is of course also very popular with holidaymakers who travel on the Baltic Sea with their sailing or motor yachts.

Small beach on the Traveufer. The narrow path directly above, which leads along the shore, is also the better alternative to the parallel bike path.

"Here stood Alt-Lübeck until 1138", the Slavic predecessor settlement of the Hanseatic city. In addition, one has from the small hill a beautiful view, for example over the Trave on the Schellbruch with its bird wealth. Anyone who shies away from a small terrain should leave the bike at the bike path and roam or push the area on foot.

I don't quite understand the special highlight. There are two country roads to Alt Lübeck, both are signposted and can also be found on the map. And whether you prefer to plough dozens of meters through the flooded meadow here in bad weather conditions or through a bit of mud at the other entrance - the further course is at least higher there - is something everyone has to decide for themselves. Neither of the entrances themselves are exactly highlights, even if the whole area is really beautiful.
Just plan to go when it's drier and then enjoy the real highlight - the peninsula with Alt Lübeck and great views☺️
(I prefer to go there through one entrance and back through the other.)

Lübeck Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The construction of the Lübeck town hall began in 1230, shortly after the granting of imperial freedom, and over the years it has been repeatedly changed and expanded. This explains the different architectural styles and parts. It was completed in 1308. It still fulfills its role today as the seat of administration, meeting place for the citizens and their committees as well as the Senate.

Wide and pleasant path to ride from Lübeck / Vorwerk towards Dänischburg to IKEA and the like and then on to Sereetz, Travemünde.
The path is also easy to ride with small children as it is fairly flat and wide enough. You don't need a mountain bike - a normal bike is no problem either. I would say you should be able to get through even with a racing bike (but I don't ride one!!). A bit "run up" by residents near the Teerhofinsel.
