War Graves Site Kloster Arnsburg

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1959-1960, a war victims' cemetery was created in the former cloister of the Cistercian monastery (1174-1803). The German War Graves Commission was looking for a worthy place to protect the isolated war graves in the Alsfeld, Büdingen and Gießen districts. With the consent of the owner, the Count of Solms-Laubach, this unique facility was created in the middle of the old monastery walls. All graves have uniform sandstones with bronze name plaques and are planted with thyme. Several grave crosses made of Michelnau tuff stones are symbolically distributed throughout the cemetery. The 450 war dead include fallen German soldiers and civilians as well as prisoners of war from various European countries who died or were murdered in captivity. 81 women and 6 men who were murdered by the Gestapo and SS in Hirzenhain a few days before the American troops invaded and buried in a mass grave in the forest were also buried here. On the inner wall of the war victims' cemetery, a name plaque commemorates the dead - with the exception of Emilie Schmitz from Luxembourg - who are no longer identified. A bronze memorial plaque in memory of all 450 war victims was donated by Madeleine Countess of Solms-Laubach. In the chapter house of the monastery, a memorial plaque commemorates those who fell and went missing in both world wars from the former community of Arnsburg.
