Schönwalde Lock

Highlight • Structure

The Schönwalde lock connects the Lower Havel Waterway with the Upper Havel Waterway. This makes it possible to bypass the Berlin urban area. The lock was commissioned on June 18, 1952. Due to material shortages during construction, a special construction method was chosen: the soles of the lock heads are at the same height, meaning the sill drop occurs before the upper gate. This construction method makes the upper and lower heads of the lock identical, and it was possible to keep only one pair of gate leaves as a spare. At the time of construction, tow navigation was still common. To facilitate this, an electric capstan was built on the north side of the lock heads.
