Rock inscriptions (Battalion v. Schladen, 1794)

Highlight • Historical Site

"In the First Coalition War there were repeated fighting at the Steigerkopf in 1794 and 1795. [...] After the death of the Prussian General von Pfau on July 13, 1794, the Prussian troops retreated. The battalion from Schladen withdrew under Major von Borck led from the Schänzel over the Benderplatz and Kohlplatz into the Rhine plain. The defeat of the coalition troops on the Schänzel resulted in a retreat to and across the Rhine. As a consequence, Prussia withdrew from the war after an armistice with France. "

This information belongs to the Ritterstein No. 69 ("Kohlplatz - Retreat battle of the Battl. Von Schladen under Major von Borck on July 13, 1794") and also applies here.

The names "v. Schladen" and "v. Borck" can be read on these rocks as well as "Königl. Preuss. Inf.".

Schänzelturm on the Steigerkopf

Highlight • Monument

In 1795 there was a battlefield below the Schänzel Tower. Two large memorial stones commemorate this. On the further way there are several carved stones that refer to the battle.

On the slopes of the riser head was the Battle of the Revolutionary Wars 1793-1797. Here at the riser head a Prussian contingent - unsuccessfully - opposed the French troops. Because the Prussians had built smaller fortifications on the mountain slope, there are nine knightly stones here, which are maintained and kept in order by the PWV Palatinate Forest Association.

The Modenbach rises south of the forester's house Heldenstein and flows at Hanhof in the Speyerbach. The photo was taken at the parking lot of the Amiitiahütte.

In addition to the good spritzer, there is also a nice hand cheese with music and, of course, who wants coffee and cake.

Short hike after the strenuous Father's Day hut duty.

At the beginning of November we started our hike in the beautiful Modenbachtal. First we walked to the Nellohütte, which fortunately was open.

Then we went up to the Kohlplatz and from there downhill again into the Edenkoben valley. At the Naturfreundehaus Edenkoben we sat outside and enjoyed the sun and the great tarte flambée.

Hike with a former colleague.
In the area of Forsthaus Heldenstein and Steigerkopf there are many monuments related to the Prussian-Austrian coalition war against revolutionary France 1792 - 1797.
After the hike, I climbed back up to the Nello hut because I was on hut duty the next day 😊
