Wehrberg monument with a view

Highlight • Monument

Preetz is considered the gateway to the Holstein Switzerland region. Nestled in a beautiful landscape of fields, forests, and numerous lakes, it offers a small-town idyll amidst an interesting natural setting.

Numerous hiking trails open up the town's parks and connect them to the surrounding countryside.

The Wehrberg is a park designed in 1918 by the Lübeck landscape architect Harry Maasz. The best way to experience it is to walk along Wehrbergallee, lined with large linden trees, and at the end of the residential area, turn left towards the Wehrberg Pavilion.

The pavilion offers a magnificent view across the Kirchsee (Lake Kirch). To the left is the residential area "An der Bergbrauerei" (At the Mountain Brewery), with the town church and the Kirchsee in the background, and to the right, the campground and canoe rental. Continuing to the right across the Schwentine River, you can see the neighboring village of Schellhorn.

At the top of the hill stands an impressive war memorial. It consists of a centrally located stone with an inscription, surrounded by eight columns, each bearing the name of the dead and missing of World War I.

The columns are connected in a circle by a wooden frame.

Next to the memorial is a stone with an inscription commemorating all victims of World War II.

From the Wehrberg hill, there are beautiful views of the Schwentine River and Lake Lanker.
