Heimkehle Show Cave

Highlight • Cave

The show cave is one of around 200 known caves in the South Harz Karst region. There is only one other gypsum cave in the whole of Germany that is open to the public as a show cave. You can explore it on a guided tour lasting around an hour and learn all sorts of interesting facts about its history. Be sure to pack a jacket, as it is very cold underground all year round.

You can find more information and opening times here: gemeinde-suedharz.de/schauhoehle-heimkehle.

Schlossteich Rottleberode

Highlight • Lake

The castle pond is a small pond in Rottleberode, measuring 7.63 hectares.
The water is considered to be rich in fish. All important Central European fish species such as eel, perch, pike, carp, roach, rudd and tench are found here, making it interesting for anglers of coarse and predatory fish. Fishing from a boat is prohibited and night fishing is permitted. Guest anglers can purchase fishing permits for this water.

The Sägemühle Inn has been permanently closed since 2025. Unfortunately, it must be said. But it's true. See also: thueringer-allgemeine.de/regionen/nordhausen/article242107216/Suedharzer-Traditionsgasthaus-vor-der-Schliessung.html

Neustadt Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Neustadt Dam (also called the Neustädter or Nordhäuser Dam) in the Harz Mountains is a reservoir near Neustadt in the Nordhausen district of Thuringia, built between 1904 and 1905. It consists of a dam, a reservoir, and a hydroelectric power plant.

The dam supplies drinking water to Nordhausen and Neustadt[3]; the water is delivered to the Nordhausen Water Association. It has the oldest dam in Thuringia. The impounded body of water is the Krebsbach. The dam belongs to the Free State of Thuringia and is operated by the Thuringian Long-Distance Water Supply (TFW).

Swimming and recreational sports in the reservoir are prohibited, as is entering the dam, but hiking is permitted around the reservoir.
