Ahnepark Information Board

Highlight • Rest Area

As early as 1975, the municipal committees decided to build a centrally located leisure facility after the communities of Niedervellmar, Obervellmar and Frommershausen had merged to form a town. The landscape area intended for this was the Ahne floodplain with a population of trees around 100 years old, the former Siebert and Landgrebe mills and agricultural meadows and pastures. After three years of construction, the approximately 11 hectare Ahnepark was opened in 1986. In memory of its former use, the circle, which is a symbol of the mill wheel and millstone, can be found many times in today's park. Park areas
The park is divided into three zones to accommodate different uses. In the area close to the town there are restaurants, a chestnut courtyard for celebrations and gatherings and a workshop meadow for sculptors. For sports and games there is a grass playing field, an all-weather and a toddler playground, a music theater, a miniature railway and much more. The natural area includes an open-air laboratory, the lake with a bird island, a flower meadow and a fruit tree meadow, as well as the wet biotope in the Elschegraben area.
Vegetation
The Ahnepark is a habitat for a variety of animals and plants. Several thousand park trees were planted in addition to the old fruit trees. These include the cherry blossoms at the entrances, the double linden avenue along the paths and the chestnut trees to shade the square areas. At the edge of the park, the planting of trees and shrubs provides natural noise protection against traffic from the neighboring federal highway. The banks and shallow water zones are covered in reeds, rushes, arrowheads, water lilies and many other aquatic plants. In combination with many thousands of flowers, the park offers attractive plays of color all year round.
Between the Ahnepark and the festival grounds, you pass a freestanding, approximately 29 m high pedunculate oak. The giant tree has a trunk circumference of approximately 5.35 m and is approximately 250 years old. The oldest tree in the city is a protected natural monument.
Sculptures
Scenes, mainly made of stone, can be found scattered around the park. They were created during sculpture symposiums that have been held at regular intervals since 1987.
Some of the sculptures make direct reference to the place where they were created, such as the oversized ear ("Silence") or the suitcases that have been left behind ("Parts of the City").

Ahnepark

Highlight • Natural

The Ahnepark is a beautifully landscaped park. There is a good restaurant right on the lake and a great playground for children that leaves nothing to be desired - there is also a place to "throw baskets". In the summer months there is even a small train that you can take a ride on.

Ahnepark, Vellmar

Highlight • Natural

The Ahnepark is considered the green heart of Vellmar and is a popular destination with extensive lakes, walking paths, and numerous recreational opportunities such as a basketball and volleyball court, table tennis tables, a mini steam train, and a modern children's playground. Along the fairytale-like circular path, you will also discover impressive sculptures. And on the lake terrace, you can relax and be pampered.
