View of Trendelburg Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Trendelburg towers above the town of the same name and is well worth a break for a long break. In the well-preserved medieval castle is now a hotel and also a cozy restaurant. A special highlight is the keep. After the Brothers Grimm lived on the Trendelburg once the famous King's daughter Rapunzel and therefore the huge tower is now called Rapunzelturm. You can climb the castle tower and with good visibility you can even see Kassel in the distance.

The legend of the three giantesses - Saba, Brama and Trendula
Mighty giants once lived in the mountains of the Reinhardswald between Diemel and the upper Weser. The most powerful was Kruko, who had built the Kruckenburg and fathered three daughters: Brama, Saba and Trendula.

After their father died, Brama and Saba adopted Christianity, but Trendula continued to be faithful to the pagan gods. She made life difficult for her sisters and bothered them. Brama wept so much day and night over her sister's injustice that she soon went blind. Because of her grief, she moved out of her father's castle and built the Bramburg herself on the opposite bank of the Weser.

Soon Saba of the evil sister Trendula was superfluous and built her own castle, the Sababurg. But she felt sorry for her blind sister Brama. Under cover of night and fog, she often visited them and returned home with the first light of the breaking day.

When Trendula found out about the visits, she became more and more envious, especially since she had been left alone by both sisters. So she decided to kill her sisters ...

After Saba was with her sister again, the envious Trendula assaulted her sister in the "murder chamber" near her father's castle and strangled her.

But the punishment followed and Trendula was struck by lightning. The funnel of the enormous impact is still visible today - the "wet cloudburst", the "water-green grave of the giantess Trendula" ...

The Dry Cloudburst is a second large sinkhole near the Wet Cloudburst. Unlike the Wet Cloudburst, the bottom is dry. ☺️
