Solar del Cid

Highlight • Monument

The Solar del Cid is a monument built in the 18th century in the place where it was thought, without historical evidence, that the house of the Cid was located. It consists of three monoliths with different coats of arms and a plaque commemorating the link between Cid and Burgos: "Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, called Cid Campeador, had his home on this site and was born in 1026. He died in Valencia in 1099 and was transferred his body to the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña, near this city, which to perpetuate the memory of such an enlightened plot of his son and hero from Burgos, erected this monument on the ancient ruins in 1784, when Carlos III reigned."

Burgos

Highlight • Settlement

Architecture friends and those interested in history are in the right place in Burgos: from the narrow old town streets, to the spacious Plaza Mayor, the impressive cathedral, various venerable monasteries and the striking castle ruins above the city, there is an incredible amount to discover here.

The Cathedral of Burgos with its many ornaments is of course a particularly impressive building that you definitely have to see. But a visit from the inside is also worthwhile, because, among other things, you can marvel at the final resting place of the Castilian knight and Spanish national hero El Cid and his wife Doña Jimena. The bones were moved here from the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña in 1835 to create a more dignified tomb for the hero. His legendary sword "Tizona" can also be seen here.

Paved Rail Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

Here we can now look forward to a peaceful tarmac surface. Whether this is necessary is anyone's guess. It would be better if the money was invested in further expanding the route!

In the Plaza de Mio Cid stands the monument statue to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar -El Cid Campeador-.
The bronze equestrian statue of the Cid was made by Juan Cristóbal and inaugurated in 1955.
With the sword and the cape flying in the wind, the equestrian image with Babieca as a mount, has an attitude of departure towards exile. The sword points towards Valencia, a city that he conquered in 1094. The statue faces the San Pablo bridge where we can see eight Cidian figures by Joaquín Lucarini.
