What to expect on Perkiomen Trail – River Trail loop from Perkiomen Township
This loop takes you on a journey alongside the Perkiomen Creek, often crossing it, ensuring pleasant water views for much of your ride. You'll pedal through a mosaic of rural landscapes, farmlands, and woodlands, interspersed with suburban towns like Collegeville and Schwenksville. While much of the Perkiomen Trail is paved or crushed limestone, be prepared for some sections, especially north of Schwenksville, where the gravel can be coarser with loose rocks, making it a bit trickier for standard touring tires. The route also includes a notable challenge: a steep hill with a 10-12% grade near Spring Mount, which will test your legs, particularly if you're heading south.
Planning your visit
Accessing the Perkiomen Trail – River Trail loop is convenient, with major trailheads at Lower Perkiomen Valley Park, Central Perkiomen Valley Park, and Green Lane Park offering parking, restrooms, and water facilities. You'll even find a bicycle repair station at some of these spots. While the trail is generally easygoing, be aware that some road crossings, particularly earlier sections like Cedar Mill and Arcola, can be busy. For a truly picturesque ride, consider visiting in spring when masses of bluebells add a vibrant splash of color to the scenery.
