Weltenburg Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

Weltenburg Abbey dates back to its founding around the year 600, and Benedictine monks still live here today. In the historic rock cellar, you can learn all about the abbey's exciting history.

If you want to delve even deeper into the monastery, you should take part in one of the very informative guided tours. However, you must register for this ten days in advance.

The culmination of your visit to the monastery is a stop at the monastery tavern. A special delicacy is the self-brewed beer, Welternburger Barock Dunkel.

All information about the monastery and the tavern can be found at kloster-weltenburg.de and klosterschenke-weltenburg.de.

View of Kelheim's city gates

Highlight • Viewpoint

You will see the Altmühltor, the Donautor and the Mittertor, all of which were built in the middle of the 13th century.

In front of the Altmühltor there was a spacious gatehouse, which was demolished in May 1875. This created a spacious space between the gate and the former bridge over the Altmühl. The Mittertor is the western entrance gate to Kelheim's old town and part of the former city fortifications. On its north side, the Donautor bears the first city coat of arms with the city gate and the Bavarian Wecken and, like the Altmühl- and Donautor, allows entry into the old town.

From the 15th century, the Donautor was the seat of the paving duties. If you drive along the Danube Cycle Path, Kelheim is well worth a visit.

A beautiful tour peppered with all the details that make a cyclist's heart beat faster.

I rescheduled this tour halfway through the way. The paths directly on the Danube are sometimes just too bad.
Totally muddy or really coarse gravel.
2x was announced to push a few meters.
But 90% of them were beautiful gravel, tarred paths including forest paths.
There are a few short extra loops where I just got lost.
You can stop …

Finally, we're back up in altitude.
And the weather gods have also remembered that it's summer. And don't take the boat to Kehlheim. Further ahead there's a small ferry that will take you and your bike for three instead of seventeen fifty. Then just go over the mountain and you've reached Kehlheim.
