Similar to Taksim Square in Istanbul, Gündoğdu Square is the main meeting place in Izmir, especially for the annual demonstrations in May.

St. Polycarp Church is the oldest church in İzmir. In 1620, with the permission of the Turkish sultan Suliman the Great, a chapel was built to serve Christian worship. This chapel was then located within the building of the French consulate. In 1630 a church with an adjoining monastery was built, which was then raised to a parish church for the French community. This church was destroyed by fire in 1688. The current church dates from 1690. It has been damaged several times, but has been restored over and over again. In 1898 the building was enlarged and repainted. The frescoes inside the church are the work of the French architect Raymond Charles Péré, who lived in İzmir. Another piece of his work is the clock tower in Konak. His image is recorded on the fresco depicting the burning of St. Polycarp. This fresco is to the right of the main altar. Raymond Péré is the man with the black mustache who waits his turn to be tortured.
