Kolham Forest Regeneration Area ('t Roegwold)

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

In 2022, a large part of the Kolham forest was cut down. Like many other (spruce) forests with a monoculture of Norway spruce, it was in poor condition due to drought and damage. A year later, there are already more than 10,000 young trees in total that will form the new forest. Both trees and shrubs for the forest and avenue trees, which mark the paths. In consultation with Dorpsbelangen, a mix of climate-resistant tree species, species that have rich litter for the soil and species that contribute to improving biodiversity were considered. In total, more than forty different species are planted. In the middle of the forest, there are now eight giant sequoias in a circle, which will serve as the meeting place.

Zwaneveldsgat

Highlight • Lake

The Zwaneveldsgat was created by excavating sand for the railway embankment of the Woldjerspoor, which ran from Groningen, via Slochteren to Weiwerd. The first train ran over the track in 1929. During the Second World War the line was demolished by the Germans to use the materials on the Eastern Front.
