Burgstall Nohfels

Highlight • Historical Site

No Wikipedia article. No hiking trail. Only wild trails: Nohfels Castle. Presumably a tower castle with several defensive ramparts. Small outer bailey on the spur to the protected natural area/nature reserve below, with its own moat. The ascent and descent are challenging. The descent via the spur to the northeast is dangerous. It's great to find something that hardly anyone knows about. Predecessor to Nohfelden Castle?

𝐹𝑙𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑒: At the Messerborn
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑘𝑠𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑑: "Messerborre"
𝐵𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑛𝑔: Well in a fertile field (Latin messis = Emte)

The square at the height of the water level consists of 30cm thick sandstone blocks, the origin of which is unknown. The clear width of the fountain is 113x124 cm. The depth is approx. 90cm. In the dry season, around 175 liters of water run in per hour.

𝐹𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒: Coins from different epochs from approx. 100 AD to modern times. Two wooden figures of saints. A stone spindle whorl. Source: Text information board

𝐺𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑢𝑛𝑔: Wolfersweiler
𝐹𝑙𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑒: Nauwald
𝐺𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑎𝑟𝑡: Lava 2 - rock

The broken stones from this quarry were used to build houses in Wolfersweiler until the 1950s. Stones from this quarry are used in many houses in the village. It was not particularly suitable for masonry because of the ability of the rock to decay. Therefore it was mostly used to fill ceilings. In the later years up to the turn of the millennium, the stones were still used as a substructure for building dirt roads. The quarry has been idle ever since. Source: Text information board
