Description

The Rocky Peak Trail – Rocky Peak Trail loop from Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park is one of those challenging jogging routes that truly earns its difficult rating: a 7.3-mile (11.7 km) loop with 1330 feet (405 metres) of climbing, achievable in about 1 hour and 24 minutes. This route is perfect if you're looking for a strenuous workout with incredible panoramic views, especially on cooler days, making it one of the most popular trails in the Rocky Peak area.

What to expect on Rocky Peak Trail – Rocky Peak Trail loop from Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park

As you tackle this loop, prepare for varied terrain and stunning vistas. The route combines wide fire roads, which can be dusty and uneven, with narrower, rockier paths, including sections of the historic Old Santa Susana Stagecoach Road. You'll journey through a landscape characterized by its arid, "Southwest" feel, with spectacular sandstone boulders and jumbled rock formations that might remind you of Joshua Tree. Keep an eye out for the sandstone wind cave about 0.75 miles from the start of the Rocky Peak Trail, and be ready for a more strenuous scramble over boulders as you approach the actual summit of Rocky Peak. The continuous uphill climbs and uneven surfaces mean you should expect a significant effort.

Planning your visit

Given the exposed nature of the trail with very little shade, it's best to plan your visit for cooler days or early mornings to avoid the heat. Always carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months, and wear sturdy shoes to handle the varied footing. Parking is available at Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, but it's always a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends, as this area is a popular outdoor recreation hub. There are no permits required for this trail.
