The Broch Cafe

Brochs are dry stone, twin walled, round tower structures, first built during the Iron Age, about 500 BC. About 20 metres in diameter with an internal staircase, it is believed that brochs were erected as symbols of status and wealth for local chieftans. In 2004 a group of Dry Stone Walling Association members set out to build a section of a broch using only the techniques and tools likely to have been used 2000 years ago.

River Balvaig Bridge

If you are visiting the River Balvaig Bridge in Strathyre, you might want to try some fishing in the nearby river. The river is home to brown trout, salmon and sea trout, but you have to follow some rules and regulations. You need a permit to fish, which you can get from James Bayne fishing tackle in Callander. You also have to respect the catch and release policy for salmon and sea trout, and use only legal methods of fishing. No fishing is allowed on Sundays for salmon and sea trout, and no organic baits are allowed in certain periods of the year.

Loch Lubnaig

Loch Lubnaig is a small lake in a beautiful location between Ben Ledi and Ben Vorlich mountains. The loch takes its name from the Gaelic ‘Lubnaig’, which means crooked, due to its shape. Beautiful ride on NCN (National Cycle Network) 7. Lots of Asphalt, a little bit of gravel, but no problem. Stunning Scottish Highland scenery. You can stop for a coffee too. It fits nicely in a ride from Kilmahog to Strathyre (only 9 miles). Strathyre is a nice village where you can stop, have a pub meal , of a coffee.
