Shrewsbury Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Shrewsbury (commonly known as Shrewsbury Abbey)
The Abbey was founded in 1083 as a Benedictine monastery by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. It grew to be one of the most important and influential abbeys in England, and an important centre of pilgrimage. Although much of the Abbey was destroyed in the 16th century, the nave survived as a parish church, and today serves as the mother church for the Parish of Holy Cross.
Cadfael
Shrewsbury Abbey is the setting for The Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters, in which the fictional Brother Cadfael is embroiled in a series of historical murder mysteries. The character of Cadfael is a Welsh Benedictine monk living at the Abbey in the first half of the 12th century.
Music
Choir- The Abbey has a long-standing reputation for excellence in choral music.
Organ- The Abbey has a fine organ, built in 1911 by William Hill and Son. shrewsburyabbey.com/music/hill-organ

The Quarry Park

Highlight • Monument

The Quarry is Shrewsbury's beautiful, 29-acre parkland, encircled by the majestic loop of the river Severn. The Quarry has been Shrewsbury's most important site for recreation since the 16th Century. It still provides the perfect place to relax, enjoy walks, picnic, fish along the banks of the River Severn, or just let off steam.

Old Shrewsbury Canal Towpath

Highlight • River

Shropshire's lost waterways were once a hub of industry, transporting coal from Telford to Shrewsbury in the 18th century, and iron ore and limestone during the 19th century. Several feats of engineering grace the now peaceful canals, including the Trench Incline, which raised boats by some 75ft and continued working until 1921; Longdon-on-Tern Aqueduct; Berwick Tunnel - the first tunnel of a significant length which had a towpath through it - and eleven guillotine-gated locks, two of which can still be seen at Hadley Park, Telford. Today, the fine gravel of the towpaths, leisure and liveaboard boats and abundance of wildlife offers a perfect playground for cyclists, walkers and runners.

Holy Trinity Church, Uffington

Highlight • Historical Site

There have been several churches built on this site. The church was first founded in around 1155 but fell into disrepair and the present building was built in 1856. Not the oldest of churches by any means but still a very nice modest replacement for the godly flock of Uffington.
