Housesteads Roman Fort

Highlight • Settlement

Lying midway along Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads is the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain, and one of the best-known from the entire Roman Empire. It was built within a decade of AD 122, when work on the Wall began, and was garrisoned by an 800-strong infantry regiment until the end of the 4th century. Excavations have revealed major buildings, defences and the civilian settlement outside its walls.

September 15, 2024,Day 6 - Housteads to Chollerford
Misty, magical, walk that was mainly flat after the first hilly section. Walked parallel to the road quite a long way. The road is fairly quiet, but cars go fast, and their noise is a bit annoying.
Got wet feet due to the damp, misty conditions, and longish grass.
Another beautiful stage, a little shorter than yesterday, and just as challenging at the beginning. Right at the start we see the foundations of an old fort, you can really imagine how it was built.
The first half leads past many Roman buildings and above all many remains of Hadrian's Wall. You can't help but be amazed at what the …

Departure after a full unlimited breakfast at the beautiful YHA at Sill hostel.
Once back on the trail, a short stop at the iconic Sycamore Gap.
Unfortunately the sycamore was cut down on a September night in 2023 by 2 idiotic teenagers whose fur I hope they are smoothing.
A beautiful panorama and mighty remains.
Up and down several times …

This was a really interesting part of the wall and also one of the most undulating. I must admit that we did not do the more strenous parts near the end as we have done it before and there is a path that goes alongside........... so we cheated a little.
The second part is a bit monotonous, but very easy to run!
