View of Buachaille Etive Mòr

Highlight • Viewpoint

This imposing mountain (pronounced 'boorkeleh ettiv moor') fills this landscape and seems to watch over the surrounding moors. At a height of 3,353 feet (1022 m), it's one of the higher surrounding peaks and can be a challenging scramble to get to the top.

The name is Gaellic and means "Great Herdsman of Etive" after the River Etive that almost surrounds it.

From here, you are afforded beautiful views of Stob Dearg, the seemingly unassailable rocky fortress that makes up the termination of Buachaille Etive Mòr. There are a few options for summiting this imposing crag, the easiest involves a tough walk with minimal scrambling and the difficulty then ramps up with a number of epic trad climbing routes up the face itself.

Glen Coe is one of Scotland most magnificent glens. The spectacle that begins with the mighty Buachaille Etive Mòr continues to enthral as you progress into the valley.

The north is menanced by a huge towering wall, topped by the infamous Aonach Eagach ridge. Glaring back across the glen are the Three Sisters, the termination of a trio of spurs thrown out by the gigantic Bidean massif. Scotland at its finest.

Devil's Staircase (West Highland Way)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Devil's Staircase is a difficult path up and over the Aonach Eagach ridge, taking you from Glen Coe to Kinlochleven. It was both built and named by British soldiers working for General Wade during his road-building programme in the early 1700s.

The name is thought to have been disturbingly prophetic as many workers tasked with building the Blackwater Dam lost their lives here after attempting the climb with a skinful from the Kingshouse Hotel.

The path itself takes you up to the highest point on the West Highland Way, at 1,768 feet (539 m), and rewards you with seemingly endless views of the surrounding moorland and mountains.

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

Lovely little segment of the West Highland Way for those that want to experience the way but can’t afford the time of multi day treks.

Kingshouse Hotel

Highlight • Restaurant

A hotel has stood on this spot since the 1800s when it was built and named by the British. Sitting in incredible surroundings, it provides a stark contrast to the wilderness.

If you head a little north over the river, you'll find a beautiful wild camping spot with room for 6-10 tents and fresh running water.
