Fountain Pen Sculpture, Safford Park

Highlight • Structure

There are two large metal fountain pen markers at the entrance to Parker Drive, interesting to have found out it used to be the Parker Pen Company which closed in 2011. I nice nod to the former factory.

The Seaplane Station (Poppy Trail)

Highlight • Historical Site

A big slab of concrete will increase your curiosity as to why it is there, the information board explains it was a WW 1 Seaplane Station that was created to help protect ships from German submarines back in 1917.

Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

The foundations of an old hospital that was for boys with physical disabilities. There is a useful information board explaining what all the buildings in the area were used for and also a story from a resident on life at the hospital.

Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

There are two public footpaths that cross the reserve and a new cycle path that runs all the way to Seaford. The cycle path is part of National Cycle Route 2.
The routes are flat and suitable for both adults and children. The bike path and footpath to the bird viewing screen are paved and suitable for electric buggies and wheelchairs.
The other footpath is not paved and is not a dedicated cycle path, but you can cycle along it in dry weather (within the reserve). Don't cycle past it when the ground is soft, as your tires can damage the surface.

Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Between Newhaven and Seaford is the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve which is home to a wide variety of birds, insects, plants and amphibians including the internationally protected Great Crested Newt.

Cutting across the nature reserve is an excellent tarmac traffic-free cycle path which is part of National Cycle Network route 2. The scenic trail is an excellent alternative to the busy A259, which runs alongside it.
