Chew Reservoir

Chew Reservoir was completed in 1912 and at the time it was the highest reservoir in England. It's designed to increase the drinking water supply for Manchester by supplementing the Dovestone Reservoir downstream.

Hovering around the 1,650 foot (500 m) mark, you have nice views of the tail end of Dovestone Reservoir and Greenfield from here. It makes for a great vantage point on a misty day when you have thin vapour clouds hanging over the reservoir. Soon you will be at Bramley’s Cot, where there will be an ever better viewpoint.

suggestions to the building’s former uses include a shepherd’s hut, explosive store or even a lodge or shelter for victorian shooting parties. it is believed to have been built between 1857 and 1889 possibly by workers from greenfield mill (now fletchers) for one-time owner bramley bottomley. bramley and wife sarah are buried at st chad’s church, uppermill. alternatively, it has been suggested tragic mp james platt, who was killed in a shooting accident at ashway gap in 1857, or cotton manufacturer abel buckley mp jp, who bought the estate and moor around 1880, had the hut built.

Dovestone Edge provides a clifftop viewpoint where you are surrounded by stunning scenery. The panoramic views from the Edge out over Dovestone and Yeoman Hay reservoirs are simply super beautiful. It is a perfect venue for the hiking enthusiasts, as the area is perforated with good walking trails to take advantage of the high vantage viewpoints. The area is noted for its quirky rock formations, of which nearby is the famous 'Trinnacle,’ a remote and highly exposed rock formation that is famous for its dramatic photogenic appeal.
