Superlambanana Bull Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The massive bull sits with head erect and turned to the right. The artist's original drip-painted technique gave a striated, hair-like texture to the colouring of the bull's hide; sadly, the bull has since been repainted in a rather less interesting uniform red. The eyes are the only spots of different colour; the complete circles of the black pupils standing starkly against the whites, intended to give a look of fierceness. The subject derives from Nandi, the bull ridden by the Hindu god, Shiva. Mistry, who intended the bull to convey an impression of potential power and strength in repose. The artwork was commissioned for the International Garden Festival 1984.

Otterspool Promenade

Highlight • Trail

Stunning wide promenade along the banks of the River Mersey. It is peaceful and calming, and along the promenade, you will find a couple of pubs and a fabulous place for teas (Otterspool Cafe). This is the perfect place to dream away a day (take a picnic). The adventurous and those who like a very long walk (6 kms) can walk to Liverpool's Pier Head along the quays further up.
Parking is free along the promenade with plenty of it, and it is served by Mersey Rail Stations (Aigburth is the nearest). My only other tip is to go on one of those decent weather clear blue sky sunny days. Perfect for cycling, runners and walkers.

The Mersey flows 70.33 miles (113 km) from Stockport to Liverpool Bay. Great pathway along the Mersey for walkers or Cyclist, you can walk all the way to Otterspool which has an amazing green space.

Brunswick Dock

Highlight • Viewpoint

A bird's-eye view of the Brunswick Dock (also known as the Brunswick Basin or Perry's Dock) and part of Perry, Wells & Green's Blackwall shipyard, looking down the Thames towards Woolwich. The tip of Greenwich marshes (Blackwall Point) is on the right and the River Lea in the left distance.

The Blackwall mast house in the foreground (built 1793, removed 1862) was a crane for masting ships, rather than using a floating sheer-hulk - the usual naval practice. Two men can be seen working a hoist, with a mast suspended, on the top of the tower. The lower range of the building, also used for storing sails and rigging, was where masts were made and stored and they could be drawn up directly from inside by the hoist, for placing in ships, or vice versa. Horses are being used in the yard below it to move shipbuilding timber. There are East Indiamen moored up in lines to the left and centre of the picture and the river is depicted as the principal highway. It is busier than the tree-lined road, with many coastal and other craft.

The Brunswick Dock was built by John Perry, adjacent to his shipyard at Blackwall, to the design of the civil engineer John Powsey (c. 1734-1799), District Surveyor for Wapping and Limehouse, between March 1789 and November 1790, when it opened.

Queen's Dock

Highlight • Historical Site

The dock was designed by Henry Berry and opened in 1785. The dock was named in honour of Queen Charlotte, the consort of George III,and it was later expanded by John Foster, Sr. At its largest, the dock consisted of a main basin and two branch docks, which were separated by a graving dock. Branch Dock Number 2 (to the north) has since been filled in and is used as a car park. The graving dock is now straddled by an apartment block, The Keel, which was formerly the HM Revenue and Customs building.

This and the other docks in the southern system were owned by British Waterways, transferred to the Canal & River Trust in 2012.

Royal Liver Building

Highlight • Historical Site

The Royal Liver Building has shaped Liverpool's cityscape for more than a century. The 90 meter high building was built in 1911 and was an architectural sensation at the time. Together with the Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building, it is one of the so-called Three Graces, one of the city's landmarks.
