Sleights railway station

Highlight • Structure

The village of Sleights and neighbouring Briggswath are situated on either side of the River Esk in the North York Moors National Park. The villages have a wealth of accommodation options, possibly due to their proximity to Whitby, a unique and popular seaside town.

Sleights has a station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs from Whitby to Middlesborough. Using the line, you could use either of the villages as a good base for exploring the North Sea coast to the east and the famously beautiful heather moorland to the west. Sleights Moor is a gorgeous place for a ramble, with sea views, purple heather and the ancient standing stones of High Bridestones.

Robin Hood's Bay Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling. Robin Hood’s Bay is reputed to have a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. It was a hub during the late 18th century, as smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.

Today, it's a busy tourist hub in summer and start of the coast-to-coast walking path. The origin of the village’s name is uncertain, but it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village.

When taking a detour into the village, be aware that you will have to negotiate a 31% incline on the way back.
