Horsey Windpump

Highlight • Historical Site

After standing silent since 1943, when the building was struck by lightning, Horsey Windpump has been brought back to life with a winding cap and turning sails. From the top, you're rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of the Norfolk countryside and Horsey Mere. There's also a tea room.

Horsey Windpump and Café

Highlight • Historical Site

Powered by tea. Propelled by cake.
Owned by the National Trust, the mill (pump), built in 1855, is in the process of being restored. It should be fully functional by autumn 2018. Helpful and friendly volunteers are keen to share their knowledge about the mill.
It was used to pump water from the drainage ditches which are below sea level up into the river.
In the 19th century there were about 250 of them, now only 4 are left, having been replaced by far more efficient (and less romantic) electric pumping stations.
The pump would have been manned by a marsh man and his boy 24/7.

Poppylands

Highlight • Cafe

WW2-themed cafe, so a bit of an unusual atmosphere but easy access and outdoor space make it a good option with a bike.

Happisburgh Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1790, this is the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia and still provides safe passage for ships around the treacherous Haisborough Sands. Today, the lighthouse is painted white with three red bands, making for a quirky photograph opportunity. It is the UK's only independently run lighthouse and is open to the public on certain days.

Happisburgh Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1790, Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia and the only independtly-run lighthouse in the UK. The iconic red and white tower is 85 feet (26 meters) high, housing its light which can be seen up to 18 miles (29 km) away. The lighthouse, which has suffered from storms throughout its history, was saved by local residents who operate and maintain the lighthouse through voluntary contributions. St Mary's Church, Happisburgh

Highlight • Historical Site

There was a church recorded here in Domesday Book of 1086. After the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539, the church passed to the Bishop of Norwich. The Norman church was completely rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. However, some of the original stones survive.
