View of Loch Lomond

Highlight • Viewpoint

Halfway between the southern end of Loch Lomond and the River Clyde, this clearing offers water views on both sides. An achievable walk from Helensburg and Balloch, it's a fun hike that can be completed in a few hours.

Gouk Hill Path Hike-a-Bike Section

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

June 24 - badly affected by fallen trees. A path of sorts has been formed to the left facing uphill (E>W) however it is very steep with a loaded bike. The forest thereafter is very difficult going, almost impassable. Perseverance, brute strength and a sense of humour needed. Overall I would suggest an alternative route.

Balloch Marina

Highlight • Structure

Balloch is known as the gateway to the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. It's well-connected to Glasgow by train, making it a popular destination for a day trip. There are a nice selection of shops and places to eat, activity providers and the restored paddle steamer, Maid of the Loch, is moored here.

The Hill House

Highlight • Historical Site

High on a hill in Helensburgh, overlooking the River Clyde, sits what is universally regarded as Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s finest domestic creation.

The Hill House is a visually arresting mix of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Scottish Baronial and Japonisme architecture and design.

Mackintosh designed nearly everything inside the Hill House too, from the decorative schemes and the furniture to the fittings and contents.

His wife, Margaret Macdonald, designed and made many of the textiles as well as a beautiful fireplace panel. Much of the house has been restored so it looks almost exactly as it did in 1904 when its first residents, Glasgow publisher Walter Blackie and his family, moved in.

The beautiful, formal gardens have also been restored in line with the early designs, using plants that would have been available at the time.
