Berwick Bridge (Old Bridge)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bridge is one-way to road traffic. You may cross when heading South, but when heading back North you should use Berwick's one and only bike lane on the New Bridge.

Berwick Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

Prior to the stone structure, wooden bridges served the crossing but were destroyed by floods and conflict. James Burrell, Surveyor of Works, recommended a stone bridge after ice destroyed the wooden one in 1608. Despite funding issues and changing designs, construction of the stone bridge began in 1611. It faced challenges, including a flood in 1621, but was completed and opened by 1624. The bridge's importance for main road traffic later declined with the construction of newer crossings. It is now a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.

Berwick Town Walls

Highlight • Historical Site

The mighty Berwick Town Walls are an iconic landmark of the town. The structure was built in 1558 to keep out invading Scots, who regularly laid claim to the town. It was the most expensive undertaking of England's Golden Age. These days, you can walk right around the walls, which are still standing. From this spot, you get a fabulous view over the town's three bridges: Berwick Bridge, Royal Tweed Bridge, and Royal Border Bridge.

Berwick Lighthouse and Pier

Highlight • Bridge

Berwick Pier and Lighthouse were built in the early 19th century and are Grade II-listed structures. The pier extends from the mouth of the River Tweed to the North Sea, where you find the lighthouse. You get lovely views from the lighthouse and as you walk along the pier. If you are lucky, there might be some seals popping their heads out of the water.

Spanning the River Tweed from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Tweedmouth, The Royal Border Bridge is an impressive railway viaduct. Open by Queen Victoria in 1850, the bridge is now a Grade-I listed structure. The bridge does not actually cross from England to Scotland, despite its name. Made from stone, it is 121 feet (37 m) high, 2,162 feet (659 m) long and has 28 arches.

Royal Tweed Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Royal Tweed Bridge spans the River Tweed and was designed to redirect traffic away from the 17th-century Berwick Bridge.

It served a crucial role as part of the A1 road, the primary route connecting London to Edinburgh, until the 1980s with the construction of the A1 River Tweed Bridge to the west of Berwick (Berwick Bypass).

From this bridge you will get an excellent view of both the Old Berwick Bridge and the Royal Border Bridge, a Grade I listed railway viaduct.

There's a shared-use cycleway on this bridge, and it's part of NCN 1.
