Herbrand Walk Coastal Road, Cooden Beach

Highlight • Viewpoint

A splendid section of road that runs right along Cooden Beach, so close that the beach gravel often overlaps onto the road. Amazing views out to see, particularly towards Eastbourne and the South Downs.

Cuckoo Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

If you are planning on riding the Cuckoo Trail with children, and returning to your starting point, I recommend starting at the Polegate end. There is a very gradual gradient along most of the route, which you might not notice if travelling south from Heathfield. Children will notice it going the other way, so it might be best for them to do the uphill section from Polegate while they have the energy.

Frenches Halt

Highlight • Structure

A charming collection of railway paraphernalia. The gates are restored from the crossing at nearby Pevensey. Push Thomas's nose or pull the lever for extra fun. There's also an amusing sign about draining cocks.

Pevensey Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Founded in the 4th century as one of the last fortresses of the Roman 'Saxon coast', Pevensey Castle was also the landing site of William the Conqueror's army in 1066. It was later returned to use as an emergency stronghold in the Second World War - you can still see machine gun posts camouflaged in the castle walls.
