Former Büchen Harbor Basin

Highlight • Structure

There are some places on the old harbor basin where two and four-legged friends can cool off.

My guess is that the port dates from the time when large gravel and sand pits were active in this area. Because whole shiploads were then transported through the canal e.g. promoted to Hamburg.
Unfortunately, nothing can be found on the Internet 🙁

St. John's Church, Siebeneichen

Highlight • Religious Site

An Eberhardt von Seueneken was already mentioned in 1211. The village itself was first mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register from 1230. At that time the first church was built, which was demolished in 1749 as dilapidated. The patron Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff, owner of Gut Wotersen, had a new church built in 1753, in which he was buried in 1772.

With the construction of the Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal, the “wet salt road” between Lüneburg and Lübeck, which was completed in 1398, Siebeneichen became the point of contact for the Stecknitz drivers. There is still a seating reserved for this boatmen's guild in the Siebeneichen church.

The origin of the place name is not clearly proven, it could have its origin from the oaks in the old village square in front of the church, because there used to be exactly seven oaks, but it is also possible that the name comes from seven farming positions.

Soveneken 1230 - heute Siebeneichen

Highlight • Settlement

Siebeneichen lies in the southeast of the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg and covers 468 hectares. It is situated between two important transport routes:

To the east of the village runs the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, opened in 1900, while to the west are the Lüneburg-Lübeck railway line and the L 200 state road.

While the L 200 ran directly through the village until the 1960s, it now runs outside the village and no longer touches the medieval village center.

The village, with its central green, has always been characterized by its unique location between the old freight route from Lüneburg to Lübeck (the "Old Salt Road") and the former Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal, situated in the Delvenau lowlands.

The small village is still dominated by the old parish church on the spacious village green, around which the farmsteads are located.

Around 1900, Siebeneichen had approximately 180 inhabitants. Today, the population has increased to about 250, primarily due to the gradual development of the Büchener Weg area. The name Siebeneichen is of German origin and is documented earlier than most other place names in the district. As early as 1211, an Eberhardt von Seueneken is mentioned, whose name is likely related to the village.

The Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230 refers to it as "Soveneken," and this first documented mention of the village is still considered its "official" founding year.

Siebeneichen is then referred to as "Soveneken" in the 1230 register, and this first documented mention of the village is therefore still considered its "official" founding year.
