Giant Sequoia Forest Liliental

Highlight • Forest

One of the biggest attractions in the Lily Valley is the forest of sequoia trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum).
Sequoia trees are native to California on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, where they can be up to 3,000 years old and reach heights of 100 meters.

The seeds for the lily valley sequoia trees come directly from California.

They were sown in the Stuttgart pheasant garden in 1956. Four years later they were planted out on an area of 1.2 hectares in Liliental and have grown splendidly ever since.

Already in 1992 the trees were on average 22 meters high.

From here you have a wonderful view of the terraces of the vineyards. The sign clearly explains how these terraces were created. Have fun getting informed!

The Kaiserstuhl offers a breathtaking view that is one of the most beautiful in all of Baden-Württemberg. The region is known for its idyllic vineyards, rolling hills and many picturesque towns that stretch along the Rhine.

The view from the Totenkopf, a viewpoint at the highest point of the Kaiserstuhl at 557 meters above sea level, is particularly impressive. From here you have a panoramic view of the entire region. On a clear day you can even see the Black Forest and the Vosges.

Another great vantage point is the Schönberg, also known as the "Kaiserstuhldom". From here you have a wonderful view of the towns of Endingen and Vogtsburg as well as of the Rhine plain and the Black Forest. In the distance you can also see the Vosges and Alsace.

Another great vantage point is the Eicherturm in Königschaffhausen. The tower is 25 meters high and offers a spectacular view of the Rhine and Alsace. The climb is definitely worth it, because the view is simply breathtaking.

There are many hiking trails and paths that lead through the Kaiserstuhl, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery and views. Some of the most beautiful trails are the Kaiserstuhlsteig, which leads through vineyards, forests and meadows, and the Panoramaweg, which leads through the picturesque villages of the Kaiserstuhl and offers a wonderful view of the surroundings.

Overall, the Kaiserstuhl is a truly unique place, known for its picturesque scenery and breathtaking views. Visitors should definitely allow time to explore the many viewpoints and hiking trails, and take in the area's beauty to the fullest.

After the rather long hike the day before, I chose a much shorter route for the second day of my hiking weekend. From Lilienhof, I headed to the Liliental Arboretum with its exotic plant park and sequoia forest. From there, I walked through a loess hollow and up to the Neulinden Tower on the Totenkopf, the highest mountain in the …

The Liliental is located in the Kaiserstuhl between Ihringen and Wasenweiler in Baden-Württemberg and is a forestry test site. The approximately 80 hectare site serves with its test areas, plantations for seed production and an arboretum of forest science. It is known for its 3-acre forest of giant sequoias and over 20 protected native species of orchids, among other things. …

A short afternoon tour with the Wauzis on well-known paths.
We "infiltrated" the skull and the Neunlindenturm on the Herrenpfad - a foul from a sporting point of view - simply more comfortable in terms of hiking. 😉😎
The further way to and through the Liliental is a ray of light in the southern Baden hiking sky at any time …

Today, the Kaiserstuhl was on the agenda again!

From the Vogelsangpass (between Bötzingen and Altvogtsburg), we moderately ascended on a beautiful path in the direction of Totenkopf. Initially, it offered great views over the Breisgau, the Freiburg Bay, and up to the Hochschwarzwald.
From the "Wanderer-Skulptur" (after 480 m), the path leads through beautiful deciduous forest. We skirted the Totenkopf …

After Barbara provided the community with such great orchid photos from the Liliental this week, we also made a pilgrimage there today, starting from the Totenkopf.
It was absolutely worth it, even if the first species are already fading - such a density and variety is really rare 😮
The Liliental has served as a forestry test site since 1958, …

This tour is such a round that you can (no - MUST) hike again and again. The wonderful paths, paths and hollow alleys are just as great as crossing the "Exotic Park" in Liliental.
Always SUPER***.
