Marxener Paradise

Highlight • Natural Monument

This gem is a product of the end of the ice age. Fascinated by its combination of hills and valley, heath and juniper, the pond and bushy beech trees.

The Lopausee is a reservoir east of Amelinghausen in the Lüneburg Heath. The Lopau was dammed here in the 1970s by a dam to form a lake with a size of approx. 12 hectares. The dam is parallel to the road embankment of the passing B209.

The lake is used exclusively as a nature area and for local recreation. The water quality is good; Fishing and swimming in the lake is possible. For the latter there is a bathing beach and a pontoon in the lake. Visitors can circle the lake on a 2.2 km long footpath and bike path. There is a restaurant and a pedal boat rental on the shore. For some time now there has also been a high ropes course on the lake. There is a children's playground in the Lopaupark am See. Every year during the traditional heather blossom festival, the lake is the stage for the grand opening fireworks display.

The Oldendorf Totenstatt (about 1.5 kilometers from the town center located) is one of the most interesting stone tombs of the district Lüneburg and a real attraction. You should definitely visit this landmark of the Lüneburg Heath.

Here are sites from almost all pre- and protohistoric eras united in one place.
From the last century comes the first site plan of the Oldendorf Totenstatt with the corresponding numbering of the graves, which has been maintained until today. F. Laux, the excavator of the dead place, had created a connection with the pottery finds and the corresponding design of the megalithic tombs, which enabled him to recognize a chronological sequence. For this reason, the graves are listed chronologically.

The burial mounds in and around the dead place belong to the later Neolithic and Bronze Age, but most are not (yet) studied. The same applies to 2 urn cemeteries of the pre-Roman Iron Age and the time of the migrations, as well as various sites of the early and middle Stone Age. Obviously, the site of the dead place has always been a popular place.
The finds that were found in the tombs of the funerary can be seen in the Archaeological Museum Oldendorf / Luhe (Amelinghausener Str. 16b). There you will also find the permanent position "Apartments for all eternity - 5700 years Oldendorf Totenstatt".

Megalithic Tombs in Lüneburg Heath

Highlight • Historical Site

Fleeing the Rhineland Carnival, we found ourselves in the wintry Lüneburg Heath. The burial ground truly impressed us. A visit to the ancient megalithic tombs is definitely worthwhile.

Confluence of Lopau and Luhe

Highlight • River

The paths are also suitable for cyclists, of course you don't get a hiking stamp as a cyclist - but it is a nice grassy area on the Luhe.

Purple heath landscapes, wide views, babbling brooks, cultivated fields and green forests - the scenic attractions of the Heeling region Amelinghausen make hikers and cyclists' hearts beat faster. Three themed hiking and biking trails offer the best opportunities to explore nature:

 Heath panorama path

Legendary giant trail

Queens way

The trails meet relevant quality standards and are designed as circular hiking trails. With a total length of up to 14 km, there are also opportunities for a shorter, individual route.

The paths are signposted, marked with directional arrows and information boards show a map overview and interesting information about the surroundings. Maps for orientation in nature are available at the Tourist Information Amelinghausen.

Eager hikers in the Amelinghausen holiday region are awarded the Heide diploma. In order to prove that you have explored one, two or all three hiking trails, a stamp card is available from the Tourist Information Amelinghausen, which can be filled in at the stamp boxes along the hiking trails. Anyone who has collected some or all of the stamps will receive the "Heide Diploma" certificate as a distinction from the Tourist Information in bronze, silver or gold.

July 29, 2025,Heidediplom - Etappe 2: "Sagenhafter Hünen-Weg" (mit Hund unterwegs)
Yesterday, we officially completed the legendary Hünenweg trail with a stamp card, the second stage of the Heath Diploma. We already hiked this route once at Easter, but without a stamp card. Personally, I like the circular route the best of the three tours.

The "Legendary Hünenweg" is a truly enjoyable hike, as long as you don't let the sometimes chaotic route irritate you. You may have to walk some sections twice, as the signs sometimes lead to dead ends. But that wasn't a problem for me, as these are usually where the best highlights are located. Incidentally, the trail is dotted with stamp …

Went on a lovely hike near Amelienhausen with family, friends, kids, and dogs. Overall, a successful tour with great people.

We're going straight from the camper pitch, because the tour doesn't start very far away.. we came to the Marxener Paradise and looked out for the Mayworm, which is said to be really poisonous. He didn't want to show himself today.. wrong time of year.. 🤪
The highlight of the trail was "The Oldendorfer Totenstatt is an old large stone …

The legendary Hünenweg is a circular hiking trail near Oldendorf / Luhe. It is 13km long and signposted with a white A on a green background. I always followed the yellow arrow on a green background. It is more noticeable because it is always attached to the side of the post.

In itself, it is a really beautiful tour that was put together by the Amelinghausen community. I just always find it a bit stupid when you go one way and have to go back the same way. That's why I deviated from the original route in two places and took a different route.
And it was a shame that the …

It was still dark when we reached the hiking car park at Lopausee in Amelinghausen at 5:15 a.m. Our first goal was the Kronsbergheide, where we entered historical ground again. No, nothing with Hermann Löns, he could have been stolen from us today. We switched to the easy subject, or, as we say today: to trash. Because right here (in …
