A junction system with 400 junctions in the Southern Heath. With the junction system, you always know where you're going. Wherever two cycle paths intersect, there's a junction. Each junction has been assigned a number between 01 and 99.
At each junction, you can spontaneously decide which place or attraction you want to explore and how far it is. The signage ensures you won't get lost, even without maps. At each junction, there's an information board with your current location and the nearest junction. Plan your own tour
Using the junctions, you can plan your own tour at home. Simply write down the junction numbers of the desired route on a piece of paper and cycle along them. Or you can use the Fietsknoop interactive map to plan your tour. Click on the junctions you want to cycle to. The distance from junction to junction and the total mileage are then calculated. You can either note down the junction numbers and the route, print them out, or download them as a GPS track.

Kurt Lichtenstein Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The 59-year-old journalist was the son of a Jewish cobbler from Berlin and had already joined the KPD in the 1920s. In 1933 he went underground, fought on the side of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War against Franco, was interned, fled and joined the French resistance movement. After the war he supported the rebuilding of the KPD and trade unions in the Ruhr area and was a KPD member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1947-1950. Herbert Wehner's companion became editor-in-chief of "Freiheit" and other communist newspapers. Because of his critical positions on the GDR, he was expelled from the KPD and later joined the SPD. Two months after the Wall was built, he wanted to report on life on the inner-German border for the “Westfälische Rundschau”. When he left the street in Zicherie to speak to the (east) German harvest workers, he was noticed, under fire and fatally wounded. The two border police officers were honored for their "exemplary fulfillment of the oath of the flag and the given combat orders" and were immediately promoted. A laudatory report appeared in the "Army-Rundschau" under the title "Well done, Peter".
