Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Marseille Cathedral (Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille or Cathédrale de La Major) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in Marseille. It has been a basilica minor since 1896. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille.
Part of the earlier, much smaller cathedral still remains, alongside the new cathedral. It was built in the 12th century in a simple romantic style. Two bays of the nave were demolished in the 1850s, when the new cathedral was built. What remains is the choir and one bay of the nave. It is commonly referred to as the "Vieille Major".
The "Nouvelle Major" was built on an enormous scale in Byzantine-Roman style from 1852 to 1896 on the site used for the cathedrals of Marseille since the fifth century, principally by the architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-1874). It is 142 meters (469 ft) long, and the main cupola is 70 meters (231 ft) high. With a capacity of 3,000 seats, it is one of the largest cathedrals in France.

La Major was built in the Neo-Byzantine style between 1852 and 1893 to the designs of architect Léon Vaudoyer. Located in the Joliette district of the 2nd arrondissement, it stands on an esplanade between the Old Port and the Port of Joliette, on the site of the former 12th-century cathedral, from which the Occitan name "Major" comes. Its architecture and interior decoration, in marble and porphyry, give it a unique appearance for a religious building.
It was elevated to a minor basilica by Leo XIII on January 24, 1896.

Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica

Highlight • Viewpoint

The French affectionately call this Marian pilgrimage church “la bonne mère” - the good mother. Around two million pilgrims arrive each year to pray in church. The 160 meter high hill on which the magnificent building stands is not only a destination for pious Christians. Tourists from all over the world come there to enjoy the great panoramic view over the city. Many also want to take a look at the Chateau d‘If, which rises majestically from the water in the immediate vicinity. The island fortress was the model for the prison from which the "Count of Monte Christo" in the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas liberated himself so spectacularly.
