Forst Brewery
The Forst brewery was founded in 1857 by the then town clerk of Merano, Franz Tappeiner, and the farmer Johann Wallnöfer. In 1863 the company was taken over by Josef Fuchs, who pushed ahead with the expansion of the brewery at its current location. The Fuchs-von Mannstein family is the fourth generation to run the company.
The Forst AG brewery (full name Forst special beer brewery, formerly Forsterbräu; in Italian, Birra Forst S.p.A.) is the largest brewery in South Tyrol. It is located in the Algunder fraction of Forst near Merano. A bottling plant is operated in Palermo to enable delivery to Sicily. With an annual production of 700,000 hectoliters, production is at the top of the regional league table. The company includes the mineral water distributors “Meraner Mineralwasser” and “Kaiserwasser” as well as eight Forsterbräus, which are located in the most important localities in South Tyrol. Further forest breweries are run in Trento and Trieste.
