What to expect on Hostel Trail loop from Foothills Open Space Preserve
The route takes you on a journey up Elephant Mountain, starting on a packed dirt path that offers plenty of shade. As you ascend, you'll pass through diverse ecosystems, from oak and bay woodlands to chaparral, with moderate inclines and some uneven terrain underfoot. The highlight is undoubtedly the sweeping views to the north, where you can spot the San Francisco Bay, Palo Alto, and even Stanford's Hoover Tower. Planning your visit
The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic Hidden Villa Hostel, the first of its kind on the west coast, built in 1937. You'll often find yourself starting and ending near the Hidden Villa working farm, where you might even see some farm animals. While the trail is enjoyable year-round, visiting during wet months means you'll see Adobe Creek flowing, adding to the scenic beauty. Parking is generally available, but arriving earlier in the day is always a good idea, especially on weekends.
