Bad Saarow station building and forecourt

Highlight • Rest Area

The Bad Saarow train station is a really beautiful and well-kept train station in the well-known spa town on the Scharmutzelsee.

Scharmützelsee

Highlight • Lake

The Scharmützelsee appears peaceful on this sunny late October day. Incidentally, it is not named after a brief military conflict, but rather takes its name from the Middle Low German corruption of the Old Sorbian word for buckthorn, Čremušn. Brandenburg's second largest lake is ten kilometers long, up to one and a half kilometers wide and a maximum of 29 meters deep.

The perfect place for a leisurely stroll along the lake. If you then take a look at the old mansions on the waterfront, you'll feel like you're in the Hamptons on Long Island - even if some of the houses still look a little abandoned.

Lake Scharmützelsee

Highlight • Lake

The lake is great! Nature, culture, great way. The water is also great - wonderfully "soft" and clear. It should be the best swimming lake in Germany 🙂
The circumnavigation is recommended, only Wendisch-Rietz did not meet my taste - too touristy 🙄

This elevated wooden shelter with a wonderful view of the Scharmützelsee is brand new. Trainees at the Müllrose forestry company built it in 2024.

Wendisch Rietz Lock

Highlight • Structure

The lock, which has existed since 1865, was renovated in 1965 with concrete chamber walls and automated in 2004. The lock is activated using the request levers at the waiting points in the respective outer harbor. During operation in the summer months, up to 10,000 pleasure boats are on the move here. It is one of three locks that must be overcome on the way from Berlin to Scharmützelsee.

Swedish House (Theresienhof Villa)

Highlight • Historical Site

The agricultural property on the eastern shore of Lake Scharmützelsee was first mentioned in documents in 1851 as "Theresienhof". It originated from a water mill. Well-known private owners included the actress Ernestine Wegner and the Renz circus family. Owned by various companies and institutions since 1918, the "Theresienhof" was used as a recreation and holiday home or training facility. In 2008, the main building, often referred to as a castle, was demolished. The striking villa ("Swedish house") built in 1911 remained.

Unfortunately, the last 800 m are missing because the cell phone battery went on strike🤪

Once around the lake - uh, well almost. On the eastern side, however, relatively much tarred and a lot of bicycle traffic.

Then indulged in wellness in the thermal baths of Bad Saarow. Was a special offer. Otherwise 22.50 euros for 3 hours. Now only 9 euros if you show the 9 euro ticket to the train. Marketing.

At nine in the morning I start to walk around my last lake in Brandenburg, which is one of the ten largest, around Scharmützelsee. It rained a lot during the night. The paths are still full of puddles, the grass is wet. I notice this immediately when I follow the small forest path along the shore instead of listening to …

Pentecost challenge 2 and it continues for the hike-aholics.

I finally started the Iron Lake and hopped around the Scharmützelsee... just before the finish I was approached by some guys on bikes "didn't we see you earlier in Wendisch Rietz?" They had... the guys were impressed and I immediately felt 3 years younger 😅

Today we took the train to Wendisch Rietz and from there clockwise around the lake. There was a manageable amount of like-minded people on the way...probably because it's Saturday.
The paths are easy to walk...here and there a café is open...unfortunately only as far as Bad Saarow...from there men / women should have something in their pockets for a little …

10/10: #ironlakechallenge Brandenburg - the Scharmützelsee aka Finaaaale.
I started in Wendisch Rietz and then went around the lake anti-clockwise, starting on the west bank. The tour was varied but surprisingly different. That's neither a positive nor a negative thing. I just had different ideas. Even on the west bank I noticed abandoned buildings. The great thing about this side …

I used Sunday for a walk around Scharmützelsee. Joining me were @Hanka🥾 and @jenny petrow and two other hiking enthusiasts. We took the route at a relaxed pace today; it was my last major preparatory walk for the 💯 Mammoth March on May 17, 2025 (annoying for me; I always get a blister in the same spot 🥴).
The route …
