Schönborn'sche Aue" towpath bridge - Geisenheim 🚴‍♂️

Highlight • Bridge

Towpath Bridge Schönborn'sche Aue – Geisenheim 🚴‍♂️

The "Towpath Bridge" runs parallel to the B42 on the beautiful cycle path. At the level of Geisenheim's "Zollstraße," you cross the old Rhine branch to the "Schönborn'sche Aue."
The wide crossing is comfortable and easy to pass for cyclists and pedestrians in both directions.🚴‍♂️

Between 2013 and 2015, the former oxbow of the Rhine in the Rhine meadows near Geisenheim was renaturalized. In the 19th century, the former island of "Schönborn'sche Aue," which is now used for agriculture and as a site for allotment gardens, was permanently connected to the banks of the Rhine.
During the renaturation project, the riverbed of the former oxbow lake was restored through dredging, allowing the Rhine to flow permanently through this area for approximately 1.2 kilometers, and the Schönborn floodplain now exists as an island once again. The Schönborn floodplain island is connected to the Rhine bank via two bridges, which primarily carry the towpath. The new towpath bridge at the outlet to the Rhine connects the allotment gardens. Since the towpath, a combined cycle and footpath, crosses the old Rhine branch, a new footbridge also had to be built. The popular cycle and footpath, with its avenue of mature poplar trees, now allows all visitors to the island to experience the renaturalized areas and the floodplain landscape with its wildlife.

Hindenburg Bridge Ruins

Highlight • Monument

The Hindenburg Bridge was a bridge over the Rhine that was destroyed in World War II and never rebuilt. You can see the remains of the bridge on both sides of the Rhine, they are partially overgrown. Remnants of former bridge piers can even be found in the Rhine. Nowadays there are no longer any Rhine bridges on a long section. You either use one of the many ferries, which is always an experience, or take a longer detour.
