Osthofen Hill Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The mountain cemetery and the mountain church are on the plateau of the Goldberg. The fortification of the gold mountain on the cemetery wall can still be guessed at, which was ordered by Emperor Henry VI in 1195. was built, but was destroyed again in the course of a feud between the Osthofener Vogt and the Bishop of Worms almost 50 years later. The surrounding wall, the walls and the drawbridge were demolished in the 19th century to make more space in the cemetery for the rapidly growing population. On an exploration tour around the mountain church you can marvel at numerous interesting, sometimes richly decorated tombstones from the 19th century, which together with a large stock of trees make the Osthofener Bergfriedhof an idyllic and shady place of rest. Tempelgasse (Osthofen)

Highlight • Historical Site

Who likes to be fascinated by myths on hikes, is right here. In Osthofen the Templars are said to have built a castle from 1215 onwards. It is believed that this was right on the Schleifgasse. After the 1865 partially preserved foundations, the Ordensburg had a size 114 to 66 feet (Source: Regionalgeschichte.net). The name Tempelgasse is therefore not out of thin air, but reminds of this part of history. In another source (dcms.bistummainz.de) is stated that around the year 1100 the Templars took over the pastoral care in Osthofen; until the dissolution in 1312. Part of the wall of St. Remigius Church is said to date from this period.
