Limburg Cathedral, also known as St. George's Cathedral, towers above the old town of Limburg. The high location on the rocks above the Lahn ensures that Limburg Cathedral is noticeable from afar. Today the building is considered to be one of the most perfect creations of late Romanesque architecture. However, elements of the early Gothic can already be seen.
History
It is no longer possible to precisely determine when the first church was built on the rock above the Lahn. Archbishop Hetti von Trier (814-847) is said to have consecrated a St. George's Church in "Lympurgensis". However, this construction is no longer verifiable.
The first verifiable church on the Limburg rock was built by the Count of Niederlahngau Konrad Kurzbold. The deed of donation for founding the monastery was issued by King Ludwig the Child on February 10, 910. Inside the present church you can still find the layout of the original building, so it must have been a pillar basilica.
A third previous building was possibly consecrated in 1058, but this no longer exists today.
The laying of the foundation stone of today's Limburg Cathedral is not known. Investigations of the wood used in the cathedral, however, provide information about the construction data. Estimates suggest that construction began between 1175 and 1200. The inauguration took place in 1235 by the Archbishop of Trier Theoderich von Wied. The builder of today's cathedral is also no longer known. A lead reliquary identifies a certain Heinrich as the donor. It could be Count Heinrich II. (Nassau) because he held the upper bailiwick during this period. However, it is quite certain that the Limburg merchants made a significant contribution to the construction. The cathedral is dedicated to St. George and Nikolaus von Myra.

Diez runs along the slopes of the Lahn Valley on both sides. The Graf Castle Diez towers steeply above the Lahn Valley and is now a youth hostel. The baroque palace Oranienstein is somewhat hidden in the upper town on the Bundeswehr site. The "Nassau Oranien" museum on the Bundeswehr site offers regular tours.
