Description
The Shawangunk Ridge State Forest loop from Shawangunk Ridge is one of those high-reward hiking routes that delivers fantastic views without an exhausting climb. This easy 3.0-mile (4.9 km) hike, with 458 feet (140 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 1 hour and 26 minutes to complete, making it a perfect choice for a scenic outing when you don't have all day.
What to expect on Shawangunk Ridge State Forest loop from Shawangunk Ridge
As you traverse the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest hiking loop, you'll find yourself on varied terrain, from wide forest paths to sections over slabs of quartz conglomerate rock. The route offers impressive rock formations and, in some parts, runs near the edge of steep 30-foot-high cliffs. The scenery is a major highlight, with panoramic north-facing views over Bear Hill and west-facing views that include the Catskill Mountains. On clear days, you might even spot land in Pennsylvania. While lower areas have good tree cover, the ridge itself is mostly exposed, so be prepared for sun. This trail is a great option if you're looking for an accessible hike with big views.
Planning your visit
This popular trail provides an excellent alternative to more crowded areas like Sam's Point in Minnewaska State Park, which is just five minutes away. The trails are generally well-marked and easy to follow, but some parts may be a little swampy after rainfall. To ensure you get a spot and avoid the busiest times, it's a good idea to arrive early or plan your visit for a weekday.
