Palanga Birutė Park

Highlight • Forest

At the end of the 19th century, Count Feliksas Tiškevičius ordered the establishment of the Palanga Birutė Park. Initially, this park was called Birutė Park and the Tiškevičiai Manor Park. The Tiškevičiai Manor Park was called this because a magnificent neo-Renaissance palace was built in the very center of the park in 1897. And the Birutė Park was also called this by no coincidence. This one of the most beautiful parks in Europe was established on the territory of Birutė Hill and the former Šventoji Birutė Forest. True, we also often hear this park called Birutė Park at present.
The Palanga Botanical (Birutė) Park was designed by the famous French landscape architect Eduard François André. He was assisted by his son Renė and the gardener from Belgium Buisen de Coulon. Eduard François André had in mind the pine forests surrounding the Palanga Botanical Park, so the French architect decided to cut down most of the deciduous trees in the territory of the Šventoji Birutė Forest. The architect and his assistants planted exotic trees in the area of the felled trees.
The work of architect E. F. Andrė and his assistants impressed many. After the work was completed, the Palanga Botanical (Birutė) Park stood out with its originally laid out paths, harmonious flower bed compositions and stagnant ponds instead of swamps overgrown with moss. This place became very popular with people, because here they encounter a great variety of moods and views.
In 2006, a sculpture of Eduard François Andrė was unveiled in the Palanga Botanical Park in order to commemorate the man without whom the establishment of the Palanga Botanical (Birutė) Park is unthinkable.

Plazė Natural Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The reserve includes the section between Karklė and Nemirseta, on the site of the former Nemirseta military training ground, includes the remnant Lake Plaza, the wetland coastal ecosystem and the coastal stretch. The reserve is intended to preserve the landscape, flora and fauna characteristic of this coastal region - the landscape of the meadows of the continental coastal section, the coastal cliff, dunes, willow willows, coastal sand dunes, steppe meadows. The rare coastal flaxseed growing here and the soil forge that lives here are especially protected.

Did you know?
Seaside Regional Park is a protected Lithuanian seaside territory between Klaipeda and old Palanga. The area of the park is 5033 ha. About half of the park area is in the sea (about 30 km2).
The stretch of the Lithuanian mainland coast is short, but there are many wonderful places here, where people, separated from the everyday life of the city, like to relax and spend their free time meaningfully. In order to preserve excellent coastal landscapes, natural and cultural heritage values, biological diversity of the Baltic Sea, to restore destroyed and damaged natural and cultural objects, and at the same time to create conditions for the development of cognitive tourism and recreation, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania established the Seaside (Karklė) Regional Park.
