Crab and Winkle Way

Highlight • Forest

The Crab and Winkle Way is a charming 7.6-mile cycle ride between Canterbury and the harbour in Whitstable. Along the way you’ll enjoy ancient broadleaved woodland and fine views. When you reach Whitstable you can try local seafood and stroll along the seafront.

Reculver Towers and Roman Fort

Highlight • Monument

King Aethelberht I of Kent( c.590-616 AD) was the first king to convert to Christianity in 601 AD after the arrival of St Augustine and the Gregorian mission in 597 AD. The medieval minster or monastery dedicated to St Mary's, with its landmark twin towers, was founded on the site of a Roman fort at Reculver. The connection with the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Kent started at Reculver when King Ecgberht I gave the land over to a priest named Bassa in 669 AD. Eadberht II, was also buried here in the 760s. The minster became a parish church on the death of William the Conqueror in 1087 when churches and other properties were returned to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Beresford Gap Coastal Path

Highlight (Segment) • Beach

It's a great ride (and I have almost no sense of smell!). The path takes you most of the way from Whitstable around to Sandwich. Where you have to leave the path, the route is very well signposted (Viking Trail). There are also a few very short sections where you need to walk (past beach huts), but otherwise, you often have the path to yourself. There are cafes along the route, so you can usually find somewhere to stop every half hour or so. Additionally, there is a good train service along the coast if you don't feel like riding back!

Westgate Bay Coastal Path

Highlight • Cycleway

The cycle path leads along the shore past Westgate Bay and the iconic blue and yellow beach huts of Westgate-on-Sea. Around the headland cliffs to the west, the town's second blue flag beach St Mildred's comes into view. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the Victorian seaside resort as well as public toilets at Westgate Bay.
