Description
If you're seeking a truly challenging gravel biking adventure with incredible payoffs, the Beeks Place – Black Star Falls loop from Corona–West is a difficult 45.0-mile (72.5 km) route that demands respect. With a hefty 4221 feet (1287 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 5 hours and 28 minutes, this is a serious test for experienced riders looking for a big day out in the Santa Ana Mountains.
What to expect on Beeks Place – Black Star Falls loop from Corona–West
The ride begins with a relatively gentle incline, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security; the climb quickly becomes demanding, featuring sustained sections at an 8% grade and some pitches flirting with double digits. As you ascend, the double-wide fire road can become increasingly rocky and loose, so be prepared for varied terrain. Your reward for the effort is the magnificent panoramic views from Beek's Place, where you can see Corona, Santiago Peak, and even the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island on clear days. While Black Star Falls is part of the loop's name, many gravel bikers choose to bypass the rugged, boulder-strewn streambed that leads to it, sticking to the main fire road. This route is best suited for riders with good fitness who enjoy a significant workout and aren't afraid of a long, exposed climb.
Planning your visit
Be prepared for a lack of shade and water sources along much of the route, making hot summer days particularly challenging; an early start or mid-afternoon ride is advised to avoid both the heat and potential crowds. Cell service can be spotty in areas, so don't rely on your phone for navigation or emergencies. Be aware of poison oak, especially if you venture off the main fire road towards the falls. The lower two miles of Black Star Canyon Road can also be extremely muddy after rainfall, so check conditions before you go.
