Ashbourne Tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Ashbourne is a nice city. The drive through the long tunnel is impressive. I was amazed by the crowded bike station at the tunnel exit and the bike traffic on the trail.

Ilam Village and Ilam Hall

Highlight • Religious Site

The picturesque village of Ilam (eye-lamb) nestles beside the River Manifold in the Staffordshire Peak District among limestone hills. It sits in the Peak District National Park on the Staffordshire border with Derbyshire, close to the famous Dovedale valley. It has Alpine style cottages, a church and river and is set against the backdrop of Bunster Hill, Thorpe Cloud and the steep and tumbling pastures. There is a youth hostel at Ilam Hall, set within Ilam Park, cared for by the National Trust.

Ilam Village and Monument

Highlight • Bridge

Ilam is a beautiful little village. No shops to speak of except for an ice-cream van in the weekends when the sun is out. Most routes out involve a reasonable climb, but worth a visit. Over the bridge from the monument and a short steep climb gives some good photo ops over the valley.

Mapleton is a pretty Derbyshire village just south of the Peak District National Park. It's close to the River Dove and makes a nice loop from Ashbourne if you walk out along the Tissington Trail, through Dovedale and back past Mapleton over the fields.

St Oswald's Church, Ashbourne

Highlight • Monument

One of the grandest churches in Derbyshire, with a slender spire of 212 feet. Referred to in the Doomsday book, the present church building dates from the mid 1200's and contains fine stained glass and monuments.

Evidence of a Norman Crypt was found during renovation works in the early 20th Century but the existing church dates from the early 1200s and the 1241 dedicated plaque is believed to be the oldest in Britain. The oldest parts of the present building are the chancel (eastern end of the church containing the altar) and the transepts (the arms of the church), which were built in the first half of the 13th Century. The main part of the nave was added in the mid-thirteen century and was widened in the late 13th Century by the addition of south aisle when a tower was also added; a north aisle was never built, possibly because of the impact of the Black Death. The last major construction was the spire, which was built in the early in the C14th.
