All Saints' Church, Denstone

Highlight • Religious Site

The church was founded by Sir Percival Heywood,  who employed George Edward Street to design it.  Street was a great architect associated with the “Gothic revival”,  ranking alongside Pugin and Butterfield.  All Saints was Street’s favourite Church,  and is regarded as one of his finest works.  Its corner stone was laid in 1860 and the church was completed in 1862.

Denstone — Village highlights

Highlight • Structure

A parish council has painted a mural on a bus shelter in memory of a former village resident.

Denstone Parish Council commissioned the design of a barn-themed mural on a bus shelter initially as part of their annual Best Kept Village Competition bid before later forming it into a commemoration to Rose Edge, a much-loved pillar of the community.

As part of the village’s 2019 submission for the competition, it was mooted in a parish council meeting that the structure should be painted.

The village cross and drinking fountain are in stone.

They are on two steps, and have an octagonal pedestal with an inscription, containing a spring in a recess with a shaped head and a semicircular projecting trough.

On the pedestal is an octagonal base carrying an octagonal shaft and a foliated cross.

Grade II listed, 1900

Uttoxeter Canal Remains

Highlight • Historical Site

The Uttoxeter Canal was built as an extension to the Caldon Canal. It was completed in 1811. The canal was short lived, closing in 1849 to enable the building of the Churnet Valley railway line. The railway closed in the early 1900's after the closure of the quarries.
Today not much of the old canal is visible because it was filled in during the construction of the railway. There is talk of restoring the canal.
