The golden milestone in Pfünz

Highlight • Monument

It is clearly visible from afar: the golden "milestone" that stands here at the entrance to Pfünz.
The art object is intended to draw attention to the Roman fort "Castra Vetoniana" on nearby Kirchberg and the Limes, which runs just eight kilometers to the north.
The artist used the golden milestone “miliarium aureum”, which once stood in the Roman Forum in Rome, as a model.

There is an elliptical metal band around the milestone. It takes up the form of an amphitheater and invites you to linger as a seat.
In the lower third of the milestone is a diorama with information about the Romans on the Limes and the "Castra Vetoniana" fort.

The UNESCO World Heritage Limes in Walting
Almost 2000 years ago, the area of the municipality of Walting was the immediate hinterland of the Limes. At the end of the 1st century AD, the Kirchberg von Pfünz became part of the border security and gained strategic importance. This is where the Roman roads Weißenburg - Kösching and Nassenfels - Böhming crossed.
The art object "Milestone" is part of the KUNSTamBANDamLIMES project, which makes the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes visible and tangible in the six Limes communities of Altmannstein, Denkendorf, Kinding, Kipfenberg, Titting and Walting as well as Neustadt an der Donau.

Eichstätt Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

A beautiful Baroque town in the Altmühl Valley. A short break is worthwhile not only because of the stunning townscape, the lovely atmosphere, and the charming places to eat and drink. You'll also find plenty to learn here – for example, at Willibaldsburg Castle with its Jura Museum or at the Altmühl Valley Nature Park Information Center.
