Horseshoe Lake

Highlight • Lake

Horseshoe Lake sits at the end of Lake Mary Road and the Lakes Basin Bike Path. You can stop here for a swim or leave your bike and hike around the lake. One thing of note is that this area has an unusually high concentration of CO2 due to underground gas reservoirs, the U.S.G.S. has been monitoring the CO2 levels since the late 1980s.

Highlight • Lake

Twin Lakes is just a few minutes drive from Mammoth Lakes. In spring a huge waterfall thunders from the mountains. The lakes are filled with trout, so it is worth taking a fishing rod.

In summer a popular hiking destination, in winter part of the ski area. The giant mammoth statue is absolutely fitting for the bustling mountain town of Mammoth at the foot of the Sierra Nevada.

Minaret Vista and summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Minaret Vista offers a stunning view of Mammoth Lakes' iconic skyline, the Minarets, which are part of the Ritter Range. You will recognize them by the sharp, jutting spires that are outstanding. You can also spot Mount Ritter at 13,157 feet and Banner Peak at 12,945 feet (3,945 meters), the two tallest peaks in the range.

You can either hike here via the Minaret Vista Trail from the Mammoth Lakes Ski area parking lot (2.6 miles roundtrip) or drive up by car. If you take the car, you will have to pay a fee of 8 Dollars for a day pass which is valid for the drive up to Devil's Postpile.

Mammoth Scenic Loop

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Mammoth Scenic Loop will take you around the region with wide shoulders and multiple locations, such as Inyo Craters, to get off you bike and explore. This road is well traveled by cyclists and traffic is slower and lighter than you'll find on 395. It can be ridden as an out and back from Mammoth Lakes, or as a loop if you take 395 for a few miles.
