Description
If you're seeking a truly epic road cycling challenge with unparalleled Sierra Nevada scenery, the Ebbets Pass – Ebbetts Pass loop from Bear Valley is absolutely worth your time. This difficult 36.3-mile (58.4 km) route packs in a staggering 4620 feet (1408 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 27 minutes to complete. It's a serious ride best suited for experienced cyclists with very good fitness, offering a rewarding journey through one of California's most scenic byways.
What to expect on Ebbets Pass – Ebbetts Pass loop from Bear Valley
As you tackle this challenging loop, you'll journey through a high Sierra alpine setting that constantly changes. Expect to see dramatic granite outcrops, ancient volcanic peaks, and deep river canyons, all carved by glaciers. The route showcases impressive stands of conifers, including giant sequoias, alongside open meadows, alpine lakes, and flowing rivers. Keep an eye out for spectacular views of the Mokelumne Wilderness, and know that reaching Kinney Lake signals you're nearing the summit of Ebbetts Pass. Be prepared for steep, sustained climbs and descents on narrow roads, often without shoulders, and navigate blind turns and steep drop-offs. The eastern approach to Ebbetts Pass is particularly known for its steep, blind hairpin turns, with some sections exceeding a 15% grade, making this a ride for confident and skilled riders.
Planning your visit
Bear Valley, at 7,100 feet, serves as a popular base for this route, and you'll find parking here. The area is renowned for its beauty in the fall when the trees change color, making it a prime time to visit. However, be ready for rapidly changing weather conditions; it's not uncommon to experience extreme heat and even snow on the same day, so pack accordingly. The roadway is generally well-paved, but the narrow, winding nature of the pass demands your full attention.
