Martinengo Castle

Highlight • Castle

It was built, albeit with a primordial aspect, at the end of 300 by Bartolomeo III, governor of Parma, Piacenza and Cremona. This beautiful building can be considered more a palace than a fortress, although with towers and a drawbridge it was built for residential purposes, later remodeled between 1450 and 1530. It is presumed however that it was built, as for most of the castles located especially in the plains, on previous fortifications inside the ancient "castrum". Residence of Marcantonio Martinengo (1546) who, in the service of Venice, distinguished himself in the battle of Lepanto, the scene of wars and family betrayals, as well as loves and incest at court, it passed ownership several times to the various descendants of the family until the second half of the 18th century, a period in which a Martinengo lived there for the last time.

Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna, surrounded by nature and flanked by a small river. Located near the Oglio river, it is known by many cyclists because it is surrounded by the paths that make up the annual mountain bike race.
